In Medina, Muhammad drafted the Constitution of Medina which specifies the rights and relationships between the various existing communities there, formed an independent Muslim community (Ummah), and managed to establish the first Islamic state. [15] Despite the continuing hostility of the Meccans, Muhammad and his followers, took control of Mecca in 630 CE., Treated its citizens with generosity, and ordered to destroy all the pagan idols. [16] In recent years in Medina, Muhammad united the various Arab tribes under Islam, [17] carried out social and religious reforms, [18] and made administrative advances that further consolidated the Islamic community. [19] At the time of his death in 632, his teachings had won the acceptance of Islam by almost all the tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. [20]
